I Am The Bread of Life
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to go to Jesus for what He can give you, instead of for who He actually is?
That's exactly what happened to a crowd of people in John 6. Jesus had just fed thousands of them with a few loaves and fish. The next day, they tracked Him down across the lake, and Jesus called it out immediately:
"Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill." (John 6:26)
In other words: you're not here for Me. You're here for My stuff.
At times, I don't think we're all that different. We treat Jesus like a genie — someone we go to when we need something. More money. A better relationship. A little relief. And Jesus loves to provide for us and give good gifts to us through His grace. But provision in this manner was not the main point. He was trying to show them, and us, who He really is.
So He says it plainly:
"I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." (John 6:35)
WHY BREAD?
This is one of seven "I am" statements Jesus makes in John's gospel, and each one is Him defining Himself on His own terms. Not "a good teacher." Not "a wise man." God, in the flesh, telling you plainly who He is.
Why bread? Because bread was the most basic, essential food of daily life. You couldn't survive without it. And Jesus is saying: you cannot survive — spiritually — without Me either.
Just like your body can't run on empty, your soul can't run on anything less than Him. Every other thing we reach for to fill that void — success, approval, a relationship, a new season of life — can feed us for a moment. None of it lasts. Jesus is saying, "I'm not offering you a moment. I am the thing that actually satisfies."
THE WORK YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO
Right before this, the crowd asks Jesus a very human question:
"What must we do to do the works God requires?" (John 6:28).
We're always looking for the checklist. Tell us what to do and we'll do it.
Jesus's answer cuts through all of it:
"The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." (John 6:29)
That's it. Not a list of works. Not a performance you have to maintain. Just faith in the One who has already done the work on your behalf. Eternal life isn't something you earn — it's something you receive.
If you've spent any time around this blog, you know that's the whole heartbeat of grace: Jesus isn't handing you a to-do list. He's handing you Himself.
STILL HUNGRY?
Here's where it gets personal. If you've trusted Christ, Jesus already lives in you. You have the Bread of Life Himself dwelling in your spirit. Which means — spiritually — you are never going hungry or thirsty again. That's settled. That's secure.
So why do so many of us still feel empty?
Because there's a difference between what's true in your spirit and what you're currently experiencing in your soul — your mind, will, and emotions.
Your spirit is fully satisfied in Christ the moment you believe. But your soul has to be renewed to that truth (Romans 12:2). Feelings lag behind facts. And when we don't feel satisfied, we go looking for satisfaction somewhere else instead of walking by faith in what's already true.
That's the trap. We go back to Jesus asking for more of His stuff, when He's already told us: "I am the bread. You don't need more stuff. You need Me."
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
If you've never trusted Jesus as your Savior, this is His invitation to you today — He is the only one who can actually satisfy the hunger you carry. Not a cause, not an achievement, not a relationship. Him. Will you come to Him?
And if you already belong to Him, let this be a reset. You don't have to keep chasing more bread. You already have the Bread of Life living inside you.
The question isn't whether you're satisfied — it's whether you're willing to believe it's true even before you feel it and let your mind be renewed to match what's already settled in your spirit.
Jesus saves. Jesus sustains. Jesus satisfies. And He secures it forever.
You don't need more from Him. You just need Him.
